Considering the landscape

  • Bannatyne Spa Hotel Battle Road Hastings, TN38 8EA United Kingdom (map)

Considering the Landscape is an exhibition of work brought together as part of the Pure residency programme.

Much of the artwork has been inspired by the time Edith has spent in Cornwall over the years with family and friends, often wandering off on her own to capture a moment.

It also reflects Edith’s love of colour and shape;

“When I paint, I start with a limited colour palette of red, yellow, blue, and white. From these a wider variety of colours emerge, reflecting my mood and my feelings. For a piece to be ‘finished’ the colours must feel right.”

Edith uses all manner of implements, both handmade and shop bought to make marks on canvas. Her intuitive style requires much contemplation and sketches before the process of actually making commences. But when Edith does finally get in to her studio to paint, she works fast, often completing several works in quick succession. This energy ensures a loose style juxtaposed with intimate intuitive mark making, giving the viewer a pathway in to the story she is seeking to tell.

Her textile pieces however take considerably longer to come to fruition. Employing both hand and machine stitching, the mark making remains integral to the narrative; an instinctive process that defines its own journey.
